Bahrain Commits to Carbon Neutrality Strategy at COP28

Bahrain Commits to Carbon Neutrality Strategy at COP28

During its participation in the 28th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP28), the Kingdom of Bahrain announced its commitment to a national carbon neutrality strategy, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2035 and achieve zero carbon emissions by 2060. Bahrain showcased its efforts at the COP28 climate summit with a distinguished pavilion, highlighting initiatives such as the National Energy Strategy and the launch of a $750 million fund. Additionally, Bahrain has established the Safaa voluntary platform to offset carbon emissions, all aimed at enhancing environmental security and demonstrating the Kingdom's dedication to sustainable development.

Mohammad Mezal, Environmental Specialist at Bahrain's Supreme Council, emphasized that the pavilion at COP28 highlights the national action plan announced by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. This plan focuses on achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 through three main paths: fostering a low-carbon economy, adapting to climate change, and creating sustainable opportunities within the new green economy. Mezal reiterated Bahrain's strategy, first announced at COP26, to reach 30 percent carbon neutrality by 2035, which includes significant investments in the green economy and efforts to mitigate 80 percent of carbon emissions originating from just seven major factories.

In addition to its carbon reduction goals, Bahrain has launched several initiatives to promote environmental conservation. These include providing incentives to reduce energy waste, increasing the use of new and renewable energy sources, and a plan to quadruple the number of mangrove trees planted. Since COP26, Bahrain has planted 400,000 mangrove trees and aims to reach 1.6 million by 2035. These efforts underscore Bahrain's proactive approach to combating climate change and enhancing environmental sustainability.
